With Between the Lines Hamburg based sculptor Frank Gerritz presents a group of works on paper at the new premises of Galerie Christian Lethert. Frank Gerritz develops countless precisely drawn graphite lines on paper into geometrically rigorous compositions, which emanate an extensive presence.
The center wall of the exhibition space shows the eponymous work »Between the Lines«, a 12-part work from 1997. The artist’s so-called ›Center Lines‹, which always measure 6.8 cm in width, run vertically or horizontally across the single sheets. The structure of the opposing line formations mold shapes and surfaces, create bounderies and connections that rhythmize the entire pictorial space.
The meticulous concentration of the graphite turns the drawings into reflective surfaces that capture the light of the environment and seem to pulsate. Frank Gerritz knows how to fill the space between the wideness of the white sheet and the density of the metallic shimmering graphite lines, between movement and stasis, between work and viewer with affective energy.
