Imi Knoebel

*1940, Germany – lives and works in Düsseldorf

Avoiding any figuration, Imi Knoebel’s early work is characterized by a reduced use of color and a geometric form language. Starting from black and white line paintings his way leads to hardboard room installations and later to colorful paintings on wood and aluminum, always located somewhere between picture and sculpture. Formal principles such as layering, sequencing and stacking as well as a mostly serial working method and a growing virtuosic use of color characterize his work until today.
