Galerie Christian Lethert is delighted to announce the first solo exhibition by artist Alicia Viebrock, in which she presents both colorful and delicate paintings in a wide variety of formats. »Ragazzi inc.« is the title of the exhibition. This is exactly the name Alicia Viebrock would give her potential company. In an act of self-empowerment, the artist transforms social attributions and the behavior of the art market without further ado and makes herself the protagonist of her narrative.
When you enter the back room of the gallery, you see two canvases that are painted with powerful brushstrokes in a gesturally expressive manner and yet are completely different. While the canvas of »Good Mood, Lost Keys« is primed in white and the composition extends over almost the entire surface, the work »Italics« offers an exciting counterpoint between the acrylic and ink painting and the pure linen ground. The dynamic painting dances across the surface in an unstoppable forward movement. The paint flows, it splashes and testifies to a strong physical presence. The fact that the artist begins her works lying on the floor and that the paint therefore does not just run in one direction reinforces its expressive character.
If you look at the opposite wall, you will see two works in which the artist has explored further painterly modes. The painting ground takes up more and more space. In the work »Sonder«, it mixes with shimmering pigments at the edges and the painting spreads across the surface in independent, island-like formations with partly flowing, partly drawing-like moments. In »Beginn«, a 200 x 300 cm work, the grounding does not cover the entire surface; application and partial omissions elevate it as part of the painting. In addition, there are only isolated, color-reduced formations, sometimes precisely placed, sometimes intertwined in unpredictable color gradients.
The works by artist Alicia Viebrock – whether intense or reduced in their painterly gesture – are united by an incredibly impressive energy and a fine balance between planned composition and intuitive painterly freedom.
